Why Harper Financial Strategies Exists

I didn't start my first business because I had some grand entrepreneurial vision.

I started it because I needed to provide for my family.

While I was still in college, I was already married, already had a young child, and was working to finish my degree. Like many business owners, there wasn't a safety net—I needed to earn an income, and building a business seemed like the best way to create opportunities for my family.

What started with a lawn mower, a pickup truck, and a commitment to taking exceptional care of every client quickly grew into a successful landscape business.

As the business grew, so did the responsibility.

Employees depended on me. Customers depended on me. Every important decision seemed to land back on my desk. I spent my days solving problems and my evenings mentally replaying everything that still needed my attention.

At the time, I thought that was simply what being a business owner meant.

Looking back, I realize I didn't know what I didn't know.

I built a business the same way many of my clients did—by working hard, taking care of people, and figuring things out as I went. Along the way, I learned that hard work alone isn't enough. Eventually, you need trusted people who can help you see what you can't see on your own. I didn't realize there were experienced advisors, mentors, and business coaches who could help me build systems, develop leaders, and create a business that wasn't completely dependent on me. I believed the only way to solve every problem was to work harder.

Eventually, I sold the business.

Not because it wasn't successful, but because I had reached a point where I couldn't see a path forward. I had built a business that relied too heavily on me, and I didn't yet have the knowledge—or the right people around me—to help me build something that could thrive without me.

That experience shaped the way I think about business ownership to this day.

It's also why Harper Financial Strategies exists.

I wanted to become the advisor I wish I'd had—someone who could help successful business owners see the bigger picture, coordinate the moving pieces, and avoid learning every lesson the hard way.

Today, we help business owners build companies that create freedom—not businesses that depend on them for every important decision.
